Let’s talk leadership myths.
Somewhere along the way, laziness and assumptions about leadership got tangled into how we think about business success. It’s time to clear them out.
Here are 5 Leadership Myths based on John Maxwell’s teachings (and why they don't hold up):
1. The Management Myth: Management and leadership aren't the same. Managers maintain systems. Leaders influence people toward positive change. (Hint: if someone can’t move people in a new direction, they’re managing, not leading.)
2. The Entrepreneur Myth: Not all business owners are leaders. Many are technicians—great at what they do, but not always inspiring teams or driving growth.
3. The Knowledge Myth: Knowledge alone isn’t leadership. Influence is. (Remember that brilliant professor no one wanted to spend time with?)
4. The Pioneer Myth: Just being first doesn’t make you a leader. If no one’s following, you’re just out front.
5. The Position Myth: Titles don’t create leaders. Influence does. Lose the title—do people still follow you? That’s leadership.
Which myth have you seen most often in your world? Hit reply and let me know!
“It’s not the position that makes the leader; it’s the leader that makes the position.” – Stanley Huffty
So, what is leadership?
Leadership is influence that’s earned—not assigned. It’s about inspiring people to buy into a vision and move with you toward something greater. (Shoutout to Simon Sinek for outlining this in his book Start with Why.)
If you’ve ever bumped into one of these myths—or felt stuck because of them—you’re not alone. Refining your leadership is an imperfect journey that brings us learning lessons, no matter how tenured we are in the role.
If you’re struggling with your leadership or influence in general, we should talk.
Yes, seriously…we can have a one-time coaching call on the house. It’s just you and me, in a safe, trusted space, accelerating your path through the challenges you face.
