Are Your Goals Too Big, Too Small…or Just Right?

We’re officially in “goal-setting season.” The 4th quarter is within reach, and most leaders I talk to are focused on one of two things:

  1. Finishing the year strong. December 31 is looming, and there’s a final push to wrap up well.

  2. Looking ahead. Strategy sessions are hitting calendars, and data is being assembled to plan for 2026.

(Side note: If you’re more of a late-January planner—don’t worry. This still applies!)

Here’s where the Goldilocks Principle comes in.

Set a goal that’s too small and it won’t inspire you—or your team. I’ve seen top talent walk away because their annual goals bored them to tears.

Set a goal that’s too big and it becomes paralyzing. It sparks fear, overwhelm, and resistance before you even begin.

But a goal that’s just right? That’s where the magic happens.

  • It feels challenging, yet achievable.

  • It sparks curiosity and momentum.

  • It builds confidence as you move forward and figure things out along the way.

Here are a few quick questions to audit your goals:

  • How does this goal connect with your core values and larger vision of success?

  • What do you secretly believe about your ability to reach this goal?

  • What resources, skills, or support do you already have to move toward with this? Where do you see gaps?

  • On a scale of 1 (low) - 10 (high), how committed are you to seeing this through?

If you’d like to dive deeper, we can evaluate your goals together. Bonus…If this is our first conversation, the time together will be completely complimentary!

Yes, seriously...we can have a one-time coaching call on the house. It's just you and me, in a safe, trusted space, accelerating your path through the challenges you face.

PS: I'm talking about year-end, but sharing a summer pic because I'm not ready to let go of the sun!
