What if it's not a strategy problem?

During a recent leadership roundtable, someone asked a big question: “Where are my leadership gaps?”
We all shared thoughts in the moment. But later—during my morning journaling (yes, I’m still a fan…some of my best clarity happens there!)—I realized we were circling something bigger.
Sometimes in business, we get so focused on tactics and strategy that we miss the umbrella principle sitting above them all.
Let me explain.
We often operate with this equation in mind:
Take the risk → Earn the reward.
But that’s not always how it plays out.
So what’s missing?
There’s a big difference between:
• Taking action to get a reward
• And taking action from a place of readiness to receive that reward
Between:
• Expecting collaboration from others
• And showing up with a collaborative spirit
Between:
• Wanting more from your team
• And modeling excellence yourself—then patiently guiding them when teachable moments arise
See the shift?
One approach is transactional. The other is transformational because you shift how you show up.
It’s not just about chasing growth—it’s about preparing the systems, the leadership, and the team culture to receive and sustain that growth.
If you’re not getting the results you want—or not getting them in a way that feels aligned—it might not be a strategic gap.
It might be an internal one.
And that’s where coaching shines.
